In its 23rd year, St. Paul's International Broomball Wizards claim to be America's oldest broomball team; the Wizards might also have the most exhaustive broomball web page. This irreverent site is fun to read, even in the off-season. The Wizards team roster is anything but traditional with listings of the players favorite drinks and other trivia. For example, it's noted that one Wizard "is aging faster than any other player on the team", while another "appears to be overcoming his chronic lumbar problem." Fans can relive the games by reading colorful narratives. A sample: "Second half, all of the guys took some pot shots at 'em like the goalie was some arcade bear." In the "What is Broomball?" section, the game is explained ("Hockey without the skates") and its Minnesota history is outlined. The sport was developed in Canada in the 1890s, and today, according to a sports expert, "There are pockets of broomball all over the country, but Minnesota in the hotbed and has the elite players." The site notes that St. Paul probably has the largest concentration of women players in the world, with 40 women's teams playing on Thursday nights alone. Before logging out, click on the Wizards' "Fishin' Report" and read of the team's lake antics.
