Euchre Bustle – Rules Repository
For nearly a decade, the Wizards have held the annual Natty Bumppo Euchre Bustle Championships. For the record, below are the rules of Wizard’s Euchre Bustle©.
| Definitions: Bid: setting trump Bidding: The player to the left of the dealer is first to bid Card Ranking: trump suit – jack (right Bauer), jack of same colored suit (left Bauer), aCe, king, queen, ten & nine - followed by high card of the other suits. Deal: five cards down to each of the four players, then flip the top card up & place on the table. The deal rotates clockwise each round of five cards played. Deck: consists of 24 cards – 6 from each suit, nine through aCe. Defending Alone: defending without your partner Euchred: missing your bid and getting set Format: Based on a star system, Wizard Euchre Bustle allows for maximum flexibility in that entrants can play as a team, with other partners, or 2-handed over the course of the weekend. Within the format, traditional teams may stick together, or breakout and play with other banquet attendees. The first team (or single) reaching 10 points wins the game. The winning player(s) of each game is awarded a star, to be posted on the Bustle Board. At the conclusion of the bustle, the top two star awardees are crowned: “Wizards, Natty Bumppo Euchre Bustle Champions.” Going Alone: bidding 5 tricks Hand: consists of the 5 cards dealt to the players (4-Handed & 2-Handed Euchre) Off Suit: any suit other than trump Trick: 1/5 of a hand Trump: established by the turned card, or by naming trump in the second round of biding Trump Suit: Each round, trump is determined before the start of play (spades, clubs, diamonds or hearts). The highest trump is the jack of the suit called. The Play: The hand is dealt; of the remaining cards the top card is turned up. Beginning with the player to the left of the dealer, each player in rotation has their turn to pass or accept the turned up card as trump. The team accepting trump is making a bid. If all players pass the first round of bidding, the players can bid another suit. If all the players pass on the second round, the dealer is forced to call a trump suit (but not the suit that appeared on the turned up card). Hands are bid and played until the first team reaches 10 points – in which the game is won. Players who win a game are each awarded 1 star on the Euchre Bustle Board. At the end of the Bustle, the two star leaders are declared the IBW Natty Bumppo Euchre Bustle Champions for the year (including prizes & bragging rights). Scoring (in a hand the following points can be awarded): Making a bid = 1 point [3 tricks or more] Euchred = 2 points [3 or more tricks, same points if setting a Going Alone hand] Going Alone = 4 points [5 tricks, getting only 4 or 3 tricks = 1 point] Defending Alone = 4 points [3 or more tricks, must be called prior to first card played of a “Going Alone” hand] Euchre Etiquette: * After the deal, place the deck to the left of the dealer – as a reminder for who is the next dealer * Score cards (4 & 6): “Keep the Horse off the Rider” [Horse represents 6, Rider represents 4] * Allow players time to re-fill their beers House Rules: ŘStars are not transferable to other players – the honor system is invoked ŘNo limits to the number of games played at the Euchre Bustle ŘAll Banquet attendees are eligible to play – including championship & prizes Ř2-Handed Euchre: same rules apply, with the exception of “Going Alone” & “Defending Alone” ŘSettling Bustle ties - drawing cards: a) shuffle deck: aCe high, b) same card: suit ranking [low to high] – spades, clubs, diamonds & hearts Ř “aCe, no face” mis-deal: does not apply |
